Help a Gringa Out...

I know there´s a completely easy answer to this that I´m overlooking right now, but quite frankly I´m too lazy at the moment to think of it. So, fellow gringa bloggers working here in Santiago as English teachers (or, as whatever, really) - how do you get the money that your employers pay you into your U.S. bank accounts?

I do NOT have an answer for you. My company could pay into my US account, but then they'd charge me the wire fees plus I'd lose money on the conversion. And opening a Chilean account is basically impossible unless you're married or own property. You can check out the Cuenta Rut at Banco Estado...theoretically if you have a Rut (which you'll have as soon as you get a work visa) you can have an account. But go into the bank to open it, I've done it twice online and they just don't ever send me the actual confirmation and ATM card, and I can't be bothered to go do it in person. You may just have to cash your checks and store your money in a safe place.

Tough question. There really is no easy answer. Like Emily said, the bank stuff is one of the trickiest parts of living in Chile.

Paypal doesn't take as much of a fee as wire transfers usually do. That's about it. You're probably better off just cashing your checks here and living off of cash.

Banks are extremely complicated here. The best way would probably be to wire money home to a person that would be like your power of attorney. Maybe paypal would work? Have you looked into that?
Hmmm... I have given up on banks and have started sticking money in random "safe" places.

Well, I send my money through western union that charges a butt ton, I only try to do that once every few months just to keep my accounts stable in the US, otherwise I live off my money, I dont think I ever looked in to any other way. I have been keeping my money in a safe place for now. Maybe once I get residency I will open an account here.

PS Romy had my jacket!! I'm getting back tonight :)

Apparently someone has been able to open an account here without residency. I have yet to try it, as I spend money faster than I come across it. So it hasn't been an issue.
